Review & Description

Richard Fortey—one of the world’s most gifted natural scientists and acclaimed author of Life, Trilobite and Earth—describes this splendid new book as a museum of the mind. But it is, as well, a perfect behind-the-scenes guide to a legendary place. Within its pages, London’s Natural History Museum, a home of treasures—plants from the voyage of Captain Cook, barnacles to which Charles Darwin devoted years of study, hidden accursed jewels—pulses with life and miraculous surprises. In an elegant and illuminating narrative, Fortey acquaints the reader with the extraordinary people, meticulous research and driving passions that helped to create the timeless experiences of wonder that fill the museum. And with the museum’s hallways and collection rooms providing a dazzling framework, Fortey offers an often eye-opening social history of the scientific accomplishments of the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Fortey’s scholarship dances with wit. Here is a book that is utterly entertaining from its first page to its last. Read more

The Evolution Conspiracy, Vol 1: Exposing Life's Inexplicable Origins & The Cult of Darwin
The Evolution Conspiracy, Vol 1: Exposing Life's Inexplicable Origins & The Cult of Darwin (Kindle Edition)
By Lisa A Shiel

Review & Description

EVOLUTION.

A deceptively simple word
that has transformed the way we look at ourselves and everything around
us. Once considered unique, man has been reduced to little more than
another animal, thanks to evolutionary theories. Textbooks present
evolution as fact-indisputable, inevitable, and incomprehensible unless
you hold a PhD in a relevant field.

Don't believe it. Anyone can understand evolution. And this book provides the tools!

Evolutionists push the idea that only religious zealots dispute evolution. The Evolution Conspiracy
exposes the faults in evolutionary theories, the half-truths, and the
inconsistencies through a secular lens. Author Shiel takes on the
challenge to demonstrate that

  • Evolution fails to meet standard criteria for a fact or a theory.
  • No one can satisfactorily define what a species is.
  • The usual definition of evolution is so vague as to be meaningless.
  • No one knows how life originated, or where the original living cell came from.
  • DNA is not infallible (despite what CSI would lead you to believe).

Read. Think. Decide for yourself.

"Shiel is consistently convincing...that evolutionary scientists
have defined 'facts' and 'theory' to suit themselves. . .[and] have
circumvented the true scientific method."--Dr. Quinton R. Rogers,
Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Dept of Molecular Biosciences, School
of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis

"This gem
of a book sheds light on the current status of evolution as a
scientific theory. Shiel examines the questions from a strictly
scientific point of view."--Michael A. Cremo, Author, Forbidden Archeology and Human Devolution

"This
book takes a fresh look at evolution, time, and human origins. What are
we? Why are we?"--Paul Abramson, Editor, Creationism.org

"Makes
the most difficult issues easy to comprehend. . .reminds us that we can
question, and should."--Emily Decobert, BookPleasures.com

 "A
powerful argument against the shibboleths of evolutionists and the cult
of Darwin...A triumph of logic over dogma!"--Timothy Birdnow, American
Daily ReviewEVOLUTION.

Only the pounding of her heart answered her. ...but not alone The instant she hit the floor she curled into the foetal position. Finally, the bare feet walked away. What You Aren't Being Told About Astronomy Volume 1: Our Created Solar System
What You Aren't Being Told About Astronomy Volume 1: Our Created Solar System (DVD)
By Spike Psarris

Review & Description

The best evolutionary models say that many of the planets in our solar system should not exist. Yet there they are. Did God create our Solar System less than 10,000 years ago, as the Bible says? Or did it form all by itself from a cloud of gas 4,6000,000,000 years ago, as secular astronomers claim? Which account of history is true? Recent discoveries in space has supported the Biblical account. Each planet in our Solar System defies the evolutionary model in multiple ways. Many of the planets and moons appear to be young, not billions of years old. Plus, these objects show evidence of design, not random processes. In this video, you will tour our magnificent Solar System, and explore these wonders in the heavens. Along the way, you will visit each of the planets and many of their moons, through more than 230 breath-taking photographs and graphics from NASA and other sources. You will see how each planet uniquely testifies of its Creator. Discover what you aren't being told about our Solar System. Read more

Review & Description

Those opposed to the teaching of evolution often make well-rehearsed claims about the science that sound powerful and convincing. And many people who support the teaching of evolution--students, teachers, parents, administrators--do not have the background to respond. They know that scientists have thoroughly dismantled these arguments, but they don't have a handy way of responding to these attacks. The Counter-Creationism Handbook is a one-stop resource for addressing over 400 of the most prevalent claims made by creationists. Each claim is followed by a succinct and scientifically valid rebuttal, and the book includes print and on-line resources for further reading and information.
The Counter-Creationism Handbook:
* Covers claims made about the disciplines of philosophy, biology, paleontology, geology, astronomy, physics and mathematics, history, and more.
* Addresses the claims of Biblical creationism, intelligent design creationism, and some creationism based on non-Christian religions.
* Includes an introduction on how to address creationists in different venues, how to deal with novel claims, and why accurate science is important.
* Is organized thematically, with extensive cross-referencing. Read more

Cosmos, Creator and Human Destiny: Answering Darwin, Dawkins, and the New Atheists (Hardcover)

Cosmos, Creator and Human Destiny: Answering Darwin, Dawkins, and the New Atheists
Cosmos, Creator and Human Destiny: Answering Darwin, Dawkins, and the New Atheists (Hardcover)
By Dave Hunt

Review & Description

EVOLUTION—Is it "The Greatest Show on Earth" as celebrated atheist author Richard Dawkins proclaims—or has it become a "Big Top Circus" paraded from town to town and school to school? Scientifically, both Creation and Evolution cannot be true. Quite simply, then, one of these belief systems is nothing more than a cruel "side show" perpetrated upon unsuspecting children and adults of all ages—while the other alone is meritorious of praise. Darwin and Dawkins both credit "natural selection" for the incredible diversity and complexity of life on earth. Can random chance processes explain the masterfully orchestrated performance of earth’s breathtaking complexity and unparalleled majesty?

Due to the influence of biblical Christianity, evolution was once almost unanimously rejected by the entire Western world, especially by leading scientists, a fact easily documented by citing Christians who are still looked to as the founders of modern science. Isaac Newton gave us the most important scientific book ever written: Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica. Yet he wrote more about the Bible than about science. Robert Boyle is known as the first modern chemist and is credited with laying the foundation of modern chemistry. His book, The Skeptical Chymist was a cornerstone work of modern chemistry. He endowed a lecture series, "The Boyle Lectures" (ironically still carried on at Oxford University, where Dawkins held forth as professor), "for proving the Christian religion against notorious infidels."

In his latest impeccably-researched volume, Dave Hunt skillfully dethrones the Darwinian imagination that has exalted itself against the knowledge of God—and in the process, reveals fatal flaws in the logic of both cosmic and secular humanism. But this myth-busting volume is not typical of Creationist literature in recent decades. It reaches far deeper than science can look, probing the heart and mind to provide soul-shaking answers to the questions of human destiny that have not only plagued atheists and skeptics, but even most Bible-believing Christians.

Niall Ferguson follows the money to tell the human story behind the evolution of our financial system, from its genesis in ancient Mesopotamia to the latest upheavals on what he calls Planet Finance. What's more, Ferguson reveals financial history as the essential backstory behind all history, arguing that the evolution of credit and debt was as important as any technological innovation in the rise of civilization. As Ferguson traces the crisis from ancient Egypt's Memphis to today's Chongqing, he offers bold and compelling new insights into the rise- and fall-of not just money but Western power as well.A richly original look at the origins of money and how it makes the world go 'round

The Sacred Depths of Nature (Hardcover)

The Sacred Depths of Nature
The Sacred Depths of Nature (Hardcover)
By Ursula Goodenough

Review & Description

For many of us, the great scientific discoveries of the modern age--the Big Bang, evolution, quantum physics, relativity-- point to an existence that is bleak, devoid of meaning, pointless. But in The Sacred Depths of Nature, eminent biologist Ursula Goodenough shows us that the scientific world view need not be a source of despair. Indeed, it can be a wellspring of solace and hope.
This eloquent volume reconciles the modern scientific understanding of reality with our timeless spiritual yearnings for reverence and continuity. Looking at topics such as evolution, emotions, sexuality, and death, Goodenough writes with rich, uncluttered detail about the workings of nature in general and of living creatures in particular. Her luminous clarity makes it possible for even non-scientists to appreciate that the origins of life and the universe are no less meaningful because of our increasingly scientific understanding of them. At the end of each chapter, Goodenough's spiritual reflections respond to the complexity of nature with vibrant emotional intensity and a sense of reverent wonder.
A beautifully written celebration of molecular biology with meditations on the spiritual and religious meaning that can be found at the heart of science, this volume makes an important contribution to the ongoing dialog between science and religion. This book will engage anyone who was ever mesmerized--or terrified--by the mysteries of existence.Ursula Goodenough is an internationally recognized cell biologist; she is also an accomplished amateur theologian--an unusual combination of interests in a time when science and religion are widely divided. In The Sacred Depths of Nature, she proposes what she calls a "planetary ethic" drawing on the lessons of both science and metaphysics, celebrating some of the mysteries that are central to both: "the mystery of why there is anything at all, rather than nothing," for one, and "the mystery of why the universe seems so strange," for another. Exploring scientifically based narratives about the creation of the universe and the origins of life, Goodenough forges a kind of religious naturalism that will not be unfamiliar to readers of New Age literature--save that her naturalism has the hard-nosed rigor of a laboratory-trained scholar behind it. Goodenough offers a crash course in the life sciences for her readers, encompassing the basics, for instance, of biochemistry in just a few paragraphs (and getting it right in the bargain), touching on Darwinian biology and population dynamics and even chaos theory to make "an epic of evolution" that has all the hallmarks of an origin myth. Faith and reason, in her view, are not mutually exclusive, and her well-written treatise makes a good argument for bridging the gap between the two. --Gregory McNamee Read more

Review & Description

A worldwide earthquake. A planet in chaos. Reality's fabric - space, time, matter - unraveling. Into this, a man without a past awakens.

A catastrophic earthquake has struck the entire world. As the survivors stagger toward an impossible recovery, they discover matters are worse than they realized. It appears the fabric of reality is fraying at the seams. The laws of space, time, and matter are breaking down. Some people adapt; some don't. Some fall prey to newly existent fates worse than death. Whether or not the world can survive such flux is anyone's guess.

A man loses his memory. A father loses his boy. A woman loses everything and is on the verge of losing her mind. As civilization spirals out of control, three strangers find themselves transforming as drastically as their environment. When their paths intersect, they discover answers to their respective mysteries that could only exist in the world as it is becoming.

A work of metaphysical fiction, Free Will Flux is not your ordinary science fiction book. It's about evolution, the power of the mind, the nature of reality, and the meaning of the life. And it's a glimpse of where we might be headed...if we aren't already there. (edited by author)A worldwide earthquake. A planet in chaos. Reality's fabric - space, time, matter - unraveling. The Moral Animal: Why We Are, the Way We Are: The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology (Paperback)
By Robert Wright

Review & Description

Are men literally born to cheat? Does monogamy actually serve women's interests? These are among the questions that have made The Moral Animal one of the most provocative science books in recent years. Wright unveils the genetic strategies behind everything from our sexual preferences to our office politics--as well as their implications for our moral codes and public policies. Illustrations. An accessible introduction to the science of evolutionary psychology and how it explains many aspects of human nature. Unlike many books on the topic, which focus on abstractions like kin selection, this book focuses on Darwinian explanations of why we are the way we are--emotionally and morally. Wright deals particularly well with explaining the reasons for the stereotypical dynamics of the three big "S's:" sex, siblings, and society. Read more

Review & Description

Bestselling author Michael Shermer's comprehensive and provocative theory on how beliefs are born, formed, reinforced, challenged, changed, and extinguished

In this work synthesizing thirty years of research, psychologist, historian of science, and the world's best-known skeptic Michael Shermer upends the traditional thinking about how humans form beliefs about the world. Simply put, beliefs come first and explanations for beliefs follow. The brain, Shermer argues, is a belief engine. From sensory data flowing in through the senses, the brain naturally begins to look for and find patterns, and then infuses those patterns with meaning. Our brains connect the dots of our world into meaningful patterns that explain why things happen, and these patterns become beliefs. Once beliefs are formed the brain begins to look for and find confirmatory evidence in support of those beliefs, which accelerates the process of reinforcing them, and round and round the process goes in a positive-feedback loop of belief confirmation. Shermer outlines the numerous cognitive tools our brains engage to reinforce our beliefs as truths.

Interlaced with his theory of belief, Shermer provides countless real-world examples of how this process operates, from politics, economics, and religion to conspiracy theories, the supernatural, and the paranormal. Ultimately, he demonstrates why science is the best tool ever devised to determine whether or not a belief matches reality.

A novel account of how the transformation of human consciousness in modern times is expressed in the fields of Science, History, Philosophy, and Art. Dr. Ben-Aharon shows how new creative concepts have been discovered and applied in physics, biology, genetics, and artificial intelligence. In the Philosophy chapter he traces the thought of Deleuze and Guattari, Foucault, Derrida, Badiou and Levinas. This new thought is no longer abstract or theoretical reasoning or speculation. It is an exercise in creating new cognitive and moral substance, taking the human beyond the traditional boundaries of body, subjectivity, and identity. The chapter on Art demonstrates how contemporary artistic work joins together with science and thinking to create a new stream of real becoming and evolution. Review & Description

The Logic of Chance offers a reappraisal and a new synthesis of theories, concepts, and hypotheses on the key aspects of the evolution of life on earth in light of comparative genomics and systems biology. The author presents many specific examples from systems and comparative genomic analysis to begin to build a new, much more detailed, complex, and realistic picture of evolution. The book examines a broad range of topics in evolutionary biology including  the inadequacy of natural selection and adaptation as the only or even the main mode of evolution; the key role of horizontal gene transfer in evolution and the consequent overhaul of the Tree of Life concept;  the central, underappreciated evolutionary importance of viruses; the origin of eukaryotes as a result of endosymbiosis; the concomitant origin of cells and viruses on the primordial earth; universal dependences between genomic and molecular-phenomic variables; and the evolving landscape of constraints that shape the evolution of genomes and molecular phenomes.

Review & Description

Consider the possibility that the history of the human race is not as simple as what has been taught in classroom textbooks. Consider the possibility that the evolutionary scientific explanation for mankind has ignored critical facts that are buried deep within the fossils and mankind's DNA. Consider the possibility that the religious stories that have often been the core basis for mankind's understanding of where it belongs in the history of creation may actually reveal a planet occupied with tyrannical giants and an elite highly intelligent race bent on genetic mutation.

As horrifying as such possibilities are, Genes, Giants, Monsters, and Men sets forth a plausible theory revealing a hidden history of mankind and a possible reason that it has remained veiled for hundreds of thousands of years. With his well-documented style and breathtaking conclusions, Dr. Joseph P. Farrell pulls back the veil and takes the reader on an odyssey behind the mysterious history and myths of the human race.

Joseph P. Farrell is a recognized scholar whose credentials include a PhD in philosophy from the University of Oxford. His literary contribution is a veritable resumé unto itself covering such fields as Nazi Germany, sacred literature, physics, finances, the Giza pyramids, and music theory. A renowned researcher with an eye to assimilate a tremendous amount of background material, Farrell is able to condense the best scholastic research in publication and draw insightful new conclusions on complex and controversial subjects.

Review & Description

The Human Psyche is a far reaching exposé of human identity that seeks to unify the startling new insights gained from modern neuroscientific studies of higher consciousness, with perspectives gained from introspection and philosophy. In simple, straightforward prose and diagrammatic form it presents several new models of the generation of, and interactions between, the neural centers that are responsible for thought, emotion and mood. It will be of particular interest to neuroscientists, neurologists, biologists, mental health professionals, students of religion and philosophers and indeed all those fascinated by the foundations of human behavior, its origins in the animal world and its implications for our future.

The Human Psyche reminds us that we live in a time when science finally has significant answers about the true nature and origins of human behavior – a perspective that heralds a new era that will inevitably see the dissolution of many hallowed, though plainly stagnant institutions and the establishment of a new world.

The Greatest Show on Earth (Kindle Edition)

The Greatest Show on Earth
The Greatest Show on Earth (Kindle Edition)
By Richard Dawkins

Review & Description

Richard Dawkins transformed our view of God in his blockbuster, The God Delusion, which sold more than 2 million copies in English alone. He revolutionized the way we see natural selection in the seminal bestseller The Selfish Gene. Now, he launches a fierce counterattack against proponents of "Intelligent Design" in his latest New York Times bestseller, The Greatest Show on Earth. "Intelligent Design" is being taught in our schools; educators are being asked to "teach the controversy" behind evolutionary theory. There is no controversy. Dawkins sifts through rich layers of scientific evidence—from living examples of natural selection to clues in the fossil record; from natural clocks that mark the vast epochs wherein evolution ran its course to the intricacies of developing embryos; from plate tectonics to molecular genetics—to make the airtight case that "we find ourselves perched on one tiny twig in the midst of a blossoming and flourishing tree of life and it is no accident, but the direct consequence of evolution by non-random selection." His unjaded passion for the natural world turns what might have been a negative argument, exposing the absurdities of the creationist position, into a positive offering to the reader: nothing less than a master’s vision of life, in all its splendor.Richard Dawkins transformed our view of God in his blockbuster, The God Delusion, which sold more than 2 million copies in English alone. The Stunning Hidden Interconnections Between Microbes and Humanity

AD 452: Attila the Hun stands ready to sack Rome. No one can stop him--but he walks away. A miracle? No...dysentery. Microbes saved the Roman Empire. Nearly a millennium later, the microbes of the Black Death ended the Middle Ages, making possible the Renaissance, western democracy, and the scientific revolution. Soon after, microbes ravaged the Americas, paving the way for their European conquest.

Again and again, microbes have shaped our health, our genetics, our history, our culture, our politics, even our religion and ethics. This book reveals much that scientists and cultural historians have learned about the pervasive interconnections between infectious microbes and humans. It also considers what our ongoing fundamental relationship with infectious microbes might mean for the future of the human species.

The “good side” of history’s worst epidemics

The surprising debt we owe to killer diseases

Where diseases came from…

…and where they may be going

Children of pestilence: disease and civilization

From Egypt to Mexico, the Romans to Attila the Hun

STDs, sexual behavior, and culture

How microbes may shape cultural cycles of puritanism and promiscuity

Guyver: Complete Box Set [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)

Guyver: Complete Box Set [Blu-ray]
Guyver: Complete Box Set [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
By Andrew Love

Review & Description

A world controlled by a sinister brotherhood who hide their fangs behind masks of humanity, known as the Chronos Corporation. While investigating a mysterious explosion near his school, Sho Fukamachi happens upon the Chronos Corporation’s greatest weapon: a techno organic suit of bio armor known as “the Guyver.” But Chronos is determined to conceal their secrets at any cost. Sho soon finds himself relentlessly pursued by its army of horrific bio-monsters. With nowhere to run, Sho is forced to call upon the fearsome power of the Guyver and rip his opponents limb from limb in a desperate struggle for survival. The broadcast series Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor (2005) marked the fifth adaptation of Yoshiki Takaya's long-running manga: the animated feature, Guyver: Out of Control (1986) was followed in 1989 by a 12-part OVA; Mark Hamill appeared in two live-action movies in 1992 and 1994. While hanging out by a lake, high school students Sho Fukamachi and Tetsuro Segawa stumble across a curious box. Inside is a futuristic mechanical device that bonds with Sho, transforming him into the redoubtable warrior Guyver I. The two teenagers and Tetsuro's whiny sister Mizuki are caught in the sinister Chronos group's efforts to fulfill the plans of the ancient alien "Creators" to build a race of supersoldiers. Sho fights an increasingly nasty series of "Zoanoid" monsters with some help from a few unlikely allies. As in Dragon Ball, each incredibly powerful monster is replaced by an even more powerful one that also bites the dust crying, "Impossible!" The story line becomes hopeless tangled, with many key points left unexplained. In the last episodes, Sho disintegrates, only to reappear a year later in a mysterious chrysalis. The series borrows heavily from other anime shows and live-action films, including Star Wars, The Terminator, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Although Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor was made in 2005, the designs and inept storytelling feel like a throwback to the '80s. But Guyver has been an important continuity, and its influence can be seen in series as recent as Witchblade. (Rated TV MA V, suitable for ages 14 and older: violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, nudity, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
